Coldplay Announce New Album Music Of The Spheres for October 2021 Release

British rock band Coldplay has announced the release of a new project, Music Of The Spheres. Via a handwritten note on Instagram, Coldplay shares that their ninth LP is scheduled to drop Friday, October 15th, 2021.

According to the note, this album will be produced by well renowned Swedish music producer Max Martin, the songwriter behind pop mega hits Britney Spears’s “Baby One More Time” and Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.”

Formed in 1996, Coldplay has been a mainstay in popular music for over two decades as one of the highest earning, streamed and awarded bands in the world. Certainly no stranger to change, Coldplay is the owner of a an eclectic and diverse catalog of music that traverses multiple genres and styles.

This will be Coldplay’s first project since 2019’s Everyday Life, a commercially successful album that was met with generally favorable reviews though somewhat criticized for a lack of thematic cohesion and consistency.

Alongside this announcement, the band released a teaser trailer that gives a sneak peek of what to expect from the forthcoming project.

The short video is an animated journey through a rendered solar system that features snippets from the twelve song track list. As viewers zoom through space, vivid and fantastical planetary bodies are showcased with alien-like hieroglyphics that heavily suggest the subject matter of the upcoming album. Based on the shared snippets, Coldplay seems to be embracing an electronic-forward sound that incorporates dynamic range and emphasizes an interplay between the organic instrumentation of their past and the glossy production of their recent releases.

Furthermore, the band closes the note to its fans with the phrase “Everyone is an alien somewhere,” signifying that themes of space and science fiction will be explored throughout the album.

In May, Coldplay released the first single for this project “Higher Power,” an atmospheric pop tune that aptly conjures visions of space with its bright synths and powerfully layered vocals.

Fans don’t need to wait much longer to hear another glimpse of this album as the song “Coloratura” is set to drop on Friday. The band also announced that the next single is slated to be released sometime in September.
